The government should censor internet. Discuss.

Title: the government should censor the internet.

Introduction

The censorship of internet has always been a controversial topic all this while. Many people have argued for the censorship of certain insulting websites while others deem it as the invasion of personal rights. However, there is no denying that the internet has its own fair share of benefits and drawbacks. It can bring about much convenience to the people in the daily life but also encourages the incidence of cyber crimes such as hacking, virus attacks and internet fraud. In my opinion, the internet should be censored.

Body
A. morally offensive websites
- negative influence on children/ teenagers
- picking up of undesirable habits
- leading to decadence of society if uncontrolled
- uncomfortable to view certain content on websites
- abuse of certain websites eg. youtube

B. increasing incidence of crime rates
- free to post any material, regardless of content
- leading to cybercrimes eg, pornography, virus attacks etc
- hassle and trouble for people.
- Internet becomes an unreliable and dangerous form of network

C. protection of human rights
- spread of offensive materials
- example: NYP sex video which was published online
-invasion of rights- content posted cannot be restricted
- example: some people make use of blogs to express their dislike on certain races, groups. (recent Singapore case)
- leads to racial disharmony and discrimination
- dire consequences

D. invasion of personal rights (rebuttal)
- people feel that they should be allowed to view any websites they wish
- lack of freedom
- brings about inconvenience and lack of entertainment eg. youtube.
- there will always be the presence of offensive websites and is impossible to censor all the possible sites. Therefore, public should be educated on the correct usage of internet.
- however, although it is challenging to control the material on the websites, it does not mean that we should stop trying.
- in this way, we will be condoning the recalcitrant actions of the offenders
- tantamount to condoning the actions of a thief who may claim that it is his own right to steal?
- censorship of websites can protect the general public from further harm. After all, peace should not be disrupted by a few spiteful words from other people.

Conclusion
The censorship of internet will be able to reduce the rate of cybercrimes and preventing the abuse of internet. Internet is an useful tool of communication which should not be misused. Although we live in a democratic world, there are certain issues which should not be allowed total freedom as it will only encourage
exploitation, in this case, the internet. Perhaps stricter laws can be enforced or the public can be educated on the proper usage of internet.

effects of automobile

Definition

An automobile (also motor car or simply car) is a wheeled passenger vehicle that carries its own motor. Most definitions of the term specify that automobiles are designed to run primarily on roads, to have seating for one to eight people, to typically have four wheels, and to be constructed principally for the transport of people rather than goods.[1] However, the term is far from precise.

Environmental problems

Automobiles release large amounts of carbon dioxide that is partly responsible for the world’s climate change (global warming). The total number of cars is increasing at the rate of about 50 million a year. The average car or light vehicle emits approximately 0.2 kilograms of carbon dioxide per kilometre - in terms of volume, that is about 1 cubic metre of carbon dioxide for every 10 kilometres travelled.

Air pollution is a major concern for environmentalists regarding the usage of automobiles. Toxic air pollutants emitted from vehicles can be detrimental to people’s health.

As more people purchase cars, noise pollution can be a problem too.

There is also increased consumption of natural resources. Large amounts of material are used in their construction, and discarded automobiles can litter the countryside and fill waste dumps. Through much of the twentieth century the vehicles have been made of steel. Increasingly, other materials, such as plastics and fiberglass, are used as construction materials. This causes land pollution as plastics are non biodegradable.

Health problems

The emissions from the vehicles which are also air pollutants can cause serious health problems. Some of these pollutants include carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and lead. The air quality drops when there is an increase in the emissions.

Carbon monoxide interferes with the body’s ability to transport oxygen to the brain, heart and other tissues. Young children and people who are suffering from heart diseases face the highest risk from this pollutant. Small amounts of this gas can cause fatigue, headaches and reduced reflexes.

Sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide results in respiratory problems and chest pains. Lead poisioning is extremely dangerous as it reduces mental ability, damages organs and raises blood pressure.

Other toxic air pollutants include benzene which can cause genetic mutation, cancer, birth defects or other health related ailments. Large amounts of these pollutants may result in death.

The family has suffered at the expense of career in Singapore society. Is this a fair comment?

The amount of damage inflicted on families due to careers has always been a controversial topic for people these years. There are many differing viewpoints regarding this and in my opinion, I feel that the welfare of the family has indeed been sacrificed in the pursuit of careers.

Firstly, there is less family interaction due to inadequate time spent between parents and children. Parents who are working spend less time with their children unwittingly as they are tied down by their job commitments. For example, some parents still work during weekends and inadvertently overlook the need for quality time with children. As a result, the frequency of family bonding drops and causes individual members of the family to drift apart over time. Research has also shown that the lack of communication between family members is detrimental to the family.

Although the government had implemented the five day work week to enable families to spend more time together, it is difficult to check the efficiency of this programme. Some offices do not follow this rule and students may still have to return to school during weekends at times. With schedules clashing, the objective of this programme is not met as both parties are busy.

Secondly, parents may neglect their children to some extent when they are working. They are too occupied by their work to bother about their children thus the lack of care and concern may cause their children to have higher chances of going astray. It is evident that the rate of juvenile delinquency is increasing. If parents do not hold a tighter rein to adolescents, they may continue to stay errant. This can be a tiring job to do when parents have other duties on hand.

Although some parents employed maids to look after their childrens welfare but maids are only in charge of their physical well-being and not their emotional state. It is essential for parents to be aware of their childrens actions and guide them to the correct path to prevent recalcitrant behaviour.

Thirdly, there is an absence of family role models when parents spend long hours at work. They reached home late and have limited time to inculcate their children the right values. Some children hardly have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of their parents during working days. A growing child usually learns his or her behaviour from parents but when both parents work, there is no one to help them differentiate between right and wrong and thus may regard their certain misdemeanors as acceptable. Parents may be indirectly encouraging them to become wayward.

Parents may think that if they teach their children the right moral values there should be no need for family role models. However, action speaks louder than words. By educating them the good virtues, it is also their responsibility to ensure that these teachings are being put into action. If not, it will be futile to equip them with such knowledge.

In conclusion, I feel that the family has suffered at the expense of career in Singapores society. The side effects of the pursuit of career may hold dire consequences for the children in time to come. Parents should attempt to spend more time with their children to make up for the time loss during work. Hopefully, a balance between family life and work can be reached.
